Remember that the reading and lecture talk about how audiences are *constructed* the author. This is separate from who is actually watching/reading. So even if the audience is not limited, the speaker always assumes certain things about their audience, such as prior knowledge or cultural experiences. For example many TED speakers are successful and come from privileged backgrounds, and they might assume that those watching come from similar backgrounds.
